WorldNextDoor and Haiti

Posted in local, reviews by Benjamin Jacob Ballarde on 18 February, 2010

Recently, I was struck by this site‘s unique perspectives and spiritually stimulating reports about the crisis in Haiti.

When I heard the news I was on my honeymoon, skipping through Europe with a whimsical smile on my face. Distraction was easy. I could excuse my ignorance by feigning naivete. Now, I’m home and unable (unwilling?) to escape the news and stories and photos and reports. They’re everywhere. Unavoidable.

So, what is there for me – a twentysomething newlywed student-barista – to do?

I can cry, sure. I can even scream, discuss, and wax on eloquently about what the government should or should not do.

Instead, I stumbled unwittingly upon World Next Door‘s coverage of the earthquake (and its aftermath) in Haiti.

Now, I can no longer tramp around, to and from work and school, unaware of reality. I’m forced to examine these devastated human beings through the grisly, loving lens of Barry’s writing and photography. I can see their tears, blood, sadness, and – somehow – hope. I can see much more than I wish to see. Barry doesn’t allow you to close your eyes. No, he makes you peer deeply into the Haitians’ eyes, and then he makes you look out from within them.

something strange…

Nationalism and America

Posted in local, philosophy, religion by Benjamin Jacob Ballarde on 15 June, 2008

I’ve become completely enamored with other countries’ (especially European states) Nationalistic pride.  I am also completely dismayed by many American’s brand of ignorant/elitist “nationalism.”  I am trying to develop my own sense of pride in the United States of America.  I’m struggling, to say the least.  I think I am proud of much of our nation’s past, but I am extremely disgruntled with the present (and the 50-odd years previous).  I’ve been reading up on Native American culture – trying to get a deeper sense of our “old” past.  I guess, through this, I’m attempting to conjure up a geographical Nationalism.  I enjoy the “mythical” histories that so many other countries possess. –such as William Blake’s stories of England (represented by his giant, Albion).

Basically, I need help.  I’m kinda stuck.
